Generous bosses at Bowers Group took the opportunity to share some festive cheer with the wider community during December by donating a portion of their 2020 Christmas party fund to three incredible charities.
The Spear & Jackson Group Christmas party is a highlight for many of our employees, and with the understandable decision taken to cancel the annual get-together, companies within the group were gifted a sizable donation from Group Chairman, Simon Hsu, to give to charities of their choice.
The ongoing pandemic has dramatically affected charities, with donations slowing due to the restriction of fundraising efforts such as events, collections, and sponsorships.
The decisions of which organisation would receive the donations were handed over to the employees of our sites across the UK, each being able to put forward a charity of choice, with Cancer Research UK, Marie Curie, and Wish Upon a Star Foundation chosen as clear favourites.
Cancer Research UK is one of the nation’s leading cancer charities working hard to beat cancer sooner. Looking to find a cure for many types of cancers, including bowel, breast, and children’s cancers, every penny counts. Employees at our Baty site, based in Burgess Hill, chose this worthy cause to donate an impressive £250.
Upon receipt of the donation, Cancer Research said,
“The generosity of supporters like Spear and Jackson Group enables Cancer Research to lead the world in discovering and developing newer and kinder treatments, and get closer to cures. Our research to beat cancer is entirely funded by the public; thanks to their generosity, our scientists, doctors, and nurses are leading the world in discovering new ways to fight cancer.”
In Bradford, our manufacturing site chose to donate their portion of the fund to Marie Curie, an organisation that provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness, and their families.
Since receiving the donation, Marie Curie said,
“Marie Curie believes every day of your life matters. When you are living with a terminal illness, you feel that more than ever. Thanks to the kind and generous donation of £250.00, the Spear & Jackson group will help more people to make the most of the time they have together.”
And last, but certainly not least, our head office based in Camberley donated their £250 to the incredible Make a Wish foundation.
Last year, nearly 86,000 children were living with a critical condition. With this diagnosis, the simple pleasures of childhood and family life are replaced by worry, disruptive, gruelling treatment, financial worries, and isolation.
Make a Wish make wishes come true for children with critical illnesses. Whether it's starring in their own films, walking with dinosaurs, going on an amazing holiday, meeting a celebrity hero, or having a bedroom makeover; their wishes are varied, personal, and life changing.
Managing Director of Bowers Group, Steve White, said
“Whilst it’s tinged with great sadness around the ongoing situation and the struggles and losses felt throughout the country, and the world, we’re happy to have been able to offer these much needed charity donations during the pandemic. Our employees were delighted to be able to have the opportunity to donate a little festive cheer to three incredible charities. Charity is at the heart of our group, and we were proud to see the Christmas spirit spread to worthy causes in the community”.
